Third Way Network is an organization putting to use an innovative model to provide affordable housing and promote safe neighborhoods in the Twin Cities region. The goal is to successfully place low-income individuals and families ready for independent living into stable, affordable housing.

The mission of Third Way Network is to create affordable housing by engaging individuals, families and organizations to be good neighbors and promote healthy, sustainable and inclusive communities.

Our focus is to promote long-term family self-sufficiency that results in home ownership.  We provide training, mentoring and housing for families.  We accomplish this by working with volunteers and other groups to create innovative housing, empower community leaders and participate as good neighbors in our communities.  Our financial sponsors help cover program and housing costs without relying on public funding.  As a network, we seek opportunities to engage others to expand this work throughout the Twin Cities.

The “first way” is the way of charity. The “second way” is based on advocacy and systems change.  Without diminishing these first two ways, we promote a “Third Way” of engaging networks of individuals, families and groups committed to solving the affordable housing crisis by being personally involved with one family at a time…and then invite others to do what they have done.

The creation of Third Way Network in Fall 2001 and Third Way Network becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2003 were both major accomplishments. However, the achievements Third Way Network is most proud of is our partnerships with our Member Groups and Strategic Partners, gaining the trust of our Financial Sponsors, working with Property Owners and, most importantly, providing at least 12 new units of affordable housing in 2004.

  • Member Groups and volunteers (businesses, membership organizations, faith-based organizations and more) adopt their neighborhood(s), identify ways to create affordable housing and complete housing renovation projects.
  • Strategic Partners (transitional housing providers, human service agencies and more) identify qualified individuals and families for placement and assist with ongoing support and services.
  • Financial Sponsors (corporations, foundations, organizations and individuals) fund a portion of housing projects and family support costs.
  • Property Owners (property managers, home owners, property investors and developers) provide below-market rental housing in return for support and incentives for finding new uses for their existing spaces.
